Elbow injuries can cause significant mobility issues, radiating pain, and permanent damage if left untreated. If you’re experiencing persistent pain in your elbow, it may be time to come see us at Elite Care Physical Therapy.

What Causes Elbow Injuries?

Elbow injuries are often the result of repetitive activity that gradually overloads the muscles and tendons surrounding the joint. Officially called epicondylitis, this condition is often referred to by the moniker “tennis elbow” or “golfer’s elbow.” While not a requirement for developing epicondylitis, these sports offer a great example of the types of activities that lead to overuse and inflammation.

Other common elbow injuries include:

  • Bursitis: inflammation of the fluid-filled pads that cushion joints, causing swelling, stiffness, and pain.

  • Sprains and Strains: sprains occur when ligaments in the elbow are overstretched or torn. Strains are similar, affecting the muscles and tendons instead of ligaments. Both conditions can cause limited flexibility, swelling, and pain around the elbow.

  • Recovery from Surgery: if you suffered a major elbow injury and underwent surgery, your doctor will recommend 4-8 weeks of therapy to regain full range of movement and functional strength.

How Can Physical Therapy Help?

Physical therapists may use a variety of tools and treatments to restore strength and flexibility to your damaged elbow.

Manual therapy, meaning massage-like manipulation of the surrounding tissue, and alternating hot and cold treatment may be used to reduce pain and swelling. Physical therapists may also have you work with light weights to rebuild muscle and regain functionality.

More specialized treatments, like ultrasound and transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation, also known as T.E.N.S., may be used to improve mobility and range of motion. Therapists often implement at-home stretching and exercise programs to support and speed your progress.
